News: Street named after Gaskell

The Manchester Evening news reported a few days ago that the new estate, Moss Side, named one of its streets Elizabeth Gaskell Square. The nearest relation of the authoress, Sarah Price, was invited to conduct the official opening ceremony.

The 65 new homes in Greenheys have all been named in honour of the writer – whose first novel Mary Barton was about the lives of the Victorian workers in the area… And it was a family affair when the development was opened, with the writer’s great-great-great granddaughter Sarah Prince as guest of honour… By coincidence, in charge of the project was Mosscare’s head of development Ingrid Gaskell – who is also related by marriage to one of the novelist’s nephews… read the full article.
