Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford: Ch. 10 Annotation – General Burgoyne

This last comparison of our nightly state of defense and fortification was made by Mrs. Forrester, whose father had served under General Burgoyne in the American war, and whose husband had fought the French in Spain.

Best known for the Battles of Saratoga (of the American Revolution),the General planned to divide New England from the Southern Colonies but logistical difficulties slowed them down. In the Battle of Freeman’s Farm he had a small victory over the Continental Army and General Gates but it resulted in many casualties. Mrs. Forrester’s father was lucky to survive.

A little under a month later he faced the American Armies again. They captured part of the British defenses and he retreated to Saratoga where he faced a larger American force causing him to surrender. It was this surrender that helped France decide to support the Americans and paved the way to Independence. He was never given another command.
