Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford: Ch. 4 Annotation – A Don Quixote Apperance

Gaskell Blog © Katherine C.

I had the opportunity of seeing Mr. Holbrook… a tall, thin, Don Quixote-looking old man …who was rather striking… wore a blue coat with brass buttons, drab breeches, and gaiters

What does Don Quixote look like? He is described by Miguel de Cervantes as a gentleman,

Bordering on fifty… of a hardy habit, spare, gaunt-featured, a very early riser and a great sportsman.

And certainly by this description there is a resemblance but thankfully Mr. Holbrook does not joust with windmills– what would dear Deborah (and all of Cranford) have said?
